The beautiful lake Kerkini and the surrounding areas, are some of the most popular birdwatching sites in Greece. The lake, along with rivers, canals, swamps, flooded fields/ cropland and highland natural habitats that surround it, is rich in bird fauna. A 1-week trip, especially during spring, gives birdwatchers the opportunity to observe more than 300 bird species. A 3 day trip in winter can add 80 species more to the list. Apart from birds, visitors can also see mamals, butterflies, orchids and many more species. The best season to plan a visit to the area, is winter (from early November to mid March) and spring (from early April to late June) during the breeding season. Below you can find some of the species that you will probably spot around the lake, mainly during these two seasons. The most common and the rare ones are not mentioned.
